Counter-Terrorism Investigation with S21 Transcriber

Disclosure notice: This is a true account of a frontline investigation – written in collaboration with Semantics 21. This may contain accounts that some readers find upsetting.

This case study is based on a real experience shared by a law enforcement/investigation agency professional and written in collaboration with Semantics 21. It is presented in a first-person format to reflect the original voice and lived reality of the investigator, with all identifying information removed or adapted in accordance with UK GDPR and safeguarding standards.

Introduction

The investigation began with the urgent seizure of a suspect’s iPhone. We’d already extracted the data using MSAB XRY and were reviewing the content in S21 LASERi‑X when we discovered a sequence of voice messages.

They sounded urgent — but they were in French. No one in our unit spoke the language fluently.

We suspected the recordings were directly relevant to an ongoing threat but we couldn’t verify the content and the official interpreter process would take days. In a case moving by the hour, we didn’t have that kind of time.

We weren’t just missing details, we were missing the whole picture — and S21 Transcriber gave it back.

We loaded the audio into S21 Transcriber, which we knew supported multilingual audio input with integrated translation.

Within minutes, it had automatically transcribed and translated the messages line by line, with timestamps, speaker breaks and full English context. We didn’t need to pause, forward audio, or copy into another system.

More importantly, the translations made sense. They gave us a clear picture of who was involved, the tone of the messages and the urgency behind them. We weren’t just hearing words, we were understanding the narrative.

This information reshaped the case. We narrowed our focus, we searched for evidence that we wouldn’t have prioritised otherwise and when we found it, we knew what it meant.

From Language Blocked to Fully Understood

The difference wasn’t just technical — it was operational.

S21 Transcriber let us act on intelligence in real time. Without waiting for external review, we were able to shift from reactive to proactive. The translations weren’t just close — they were accurate enough that when a native speaker later reviewed the audio, they confirmed the context was preserved.

That meant admissible evidence. That meant accurate risk evaluation. That meant control.

One tool, minutes of work and a completely different direction for the investigation.

“We had access to the information we needed instantly and we could act before the situation escalated. That’s not something we could say very often.”

What if we hadn’t acted?

Without S21 Transcriber, we would’ve reviewed that phone in silence.

The voice notes would’ve stayed in the background — unprioritised, untranslated and unactioned. The sense of threat behind them? Missed entirely.

We might’ve failed to act in time. We might’ve lost the opportunity to prevent harm. We might’ve submitted evidence with a huge gap in context.

Instead, S21 Transcriber gave us intelligence, clarity and speed when we had none.
