Introduction
When proving an image originated from a suspect device, iPhones present a unique challenge. Serial numbers aren’t embedded in the file metadata, and that leaves a gap in traditional evidence chains.
In this case, an investigator faced precisely that obstacle. The court demanded proof that a specific image came from the suspect’s device. All traditional clues had been presented — but it wasn’t enough.
That’s when S21 LASERi-X revealed the one clue that couldn’t be ignored.
Hidden in Metadata
Using traditional analysis, the investigator had already established several strong links:
• Image filenames in near-perfect sequence
• Same device model
• Matching GPS proximity
• Time gaps between images measured in hours, not days
But the defence still contested the link.
Using S21 LASERi-X’s advanced EXIF and metadata capabilities, the investigator went deeper. The system revealed how long the device had been turned on when each image was taken.
When compared with GPS timestamps, the results were conclusive: the two images were taken on devices powered on at exactly the same millisecond.
A match that couldn’t be a coincidence.
Faced with this evidence, the defence changed their plea.
