Introduction
It started with a single image — an indecent photograph of a child wearing a plain pink nighty. No face. No identifying background. Just a blurred glimpse into what was clearly a crime. The image surfaced during a major investigation inside the Digital Investigation and Intelligence Department of a large police force.
With so little to go on, any hope of identifying the victim looked bleak.
But something about the pink nighty caught the Victim ID Officer’s attention. A detail like that — subtle but potentially distinctive — can be all it takes.
And that’s when the pink became the key.
Threads Unravelled
With no other obvious markers in the image, the officer turned to S21 LASERi-X’s colour search feature. A few clicks, a sample from the pink nighty and the software was scanning through hundreds of thousands of images, intelligently widening the match criteria to account for light and shade differences.
The result? Dozens of related images — and crucially, some with faces clearly visible. One of the matches showed both the victim and the abuser, ending days of painstaking review in a matter of minutes.
The investigation didn’t stop there. Using S21 LASERi-X, the officer expanded the connections, identifying further related images and ultimately corroborating a timeline and pattern of abuse. Victim and offender were both identified — and the victim was protected.
Here, the results were instant and accurate, allowing fast escalation and action.
