Introduction
At 03:12 AM, a fire tore through the ground floor of a semi-detached home in a quiet estate. A neighbour pulled the mother and her two children from the smoke just in time.
The fire crews found accelerant at the door. This wasn’t accidental, it was planned.
The only footage came from a cheap external CCTV camera facing the drive. Frame rate was low. Light conditions were worse. A shadowy figure moved fast. Hooded, masked and gloved. But they left a signature: a petrol can in hand, and something burning at their feet as they ran.
The enhancement didn’t just clean up the image — it changed the direction of the case.
We imported the footage directly into S21 CCTV. No format conversion or lag. Just results.
We started with the enhancement toolkit: exposure correction, noise reduction, stabilisation and deblurring. Slowly, detail emerged. The petrol can became identifiable by its shape and handle. Then came the breakthrough: a reflective strip on one shoe.
That strip became our focal point. We used motion analysis to isolate related activity nearby. A doorbell cam 15 metres away captured a walk-by. A dashcam showed the same figure arriving on foot — and there it was again: the reflective strip.
Using those visual markers, we built a three-camera timeline of the suspect’s approach, ignition and exit.
From Shadows to Signatures
The figure remained anonymous — until S21 CCTV broke the problem into clues we could act on. The enhanced shoe detail led to a suspect with a prior record in a similar offence.
During the warrant, we found trainers with the same reflective detailing and a petrol-scented hoodie matching the outline seen on the footage. The footage and image enhancements were submitted as part of a court-admissible visual report.
Three angles, one reflection and the break we needed.
The fire was treated as attempted murder. The family was relocated under emergency safeguarding measures and thanks to the quick ID and clear visual correlation, the evidence package was accepted by CPS within 48 hours.
