The Victim Behind the Badge

Justice wore a badge. So did the victim.

CSAM Investigation with S21 LASERi-X

Disclosure notice: This is a true account of a frontline investigation – written in collaboration with Semantics 21. This may contain accounts that some readers find upsetting.

This case study is based on a real experience shared by a law enforcement/investigation agency professional and written in collaboration with Semantics 21. Introduction

We were deep into a most-extreme CSAM case — the kind that starts with a knock on the door and ends with terabytes of horror to wade through.

It was one of several active investigations on my desk and this suspect’s devices had already been imaged and ingested using Magnet AXIOM and MSAB XRY for mobile review. The volume wasn’t unusual: hundreds of thousands of files, including several manually created folders of material that seemed organised by victim.

I was reviewing early hits inside S21 LASERi‑X, running a fast-pass triage before the full ingestion was complete. I find this helps spot potential victims earlier – a pattern we’ve adopted more and more when volume is overwhelming.

That’s when I saw it. Just a few seconds. That’s all it took.

The clip was handheld, maybe from a phone or a low-end webcam. A short scene, low quality, jittery. But in it, a young child appears — just for a few seconds — wearing what looked like a school blazer. You couldn’t make out much, but there was definitely a badge or crest on the pocket.

Now, if you’ve worked these cases, you know how often this kind of clue goes nowhere. A uniform with no details. A blur that might be something – but might not.

Still, something about that moment stuck with me. I paused the frame, enhanced it using the Super-Resolution tool in S21 LASERi‑X and got just enough detail to try a lookup.

That’s where the breakthrough came.

No delays. No online risk. Everything inside S21.

I used the S21 School Badge Lookup feature — fully offline, no internet connection, no risk of operational compromise. After entering some descriptions of the badge, it returned a match: a verified school badge, school name, location and contact information for the headteacher.

Let me be clear — no other tool I’ve used offers this.

In the past, I might have spent days trawling school websites, messaging safeguarding leads, or even crowd-sourcing internal forums. All of which carry risk, delay, or worse — may never lead anywhere.

Here, the results were instant and accurate, allowing fast escalation and action.

I shared the match with our safeguarding contact, and we made the call to the school within hours. They took it seriously — the headteacher responded immediately and in coordination with local safeguarding authorities, the child was identified that same afternoon.

We’re trained not to get emotional but this hit hard. That child might have stayed unidentified in a sea of footage — just another “unknown” in a case already heavy with numbers. Instead, we had a name, a response and a pathway to protect them.

“S21 didn’t just help us do our job — they helped safeguard a child we might never have found in time. And they did it in a way no other platform could.”

What if we hadn’t acted?

It’s a question I keep thinking about. If I’d flagged it to investigate later, or waited for better frames, or relied on traditional school matching – we might have missed the moment.

The video was buried deep in a disorganised folder. It could’ve gone overlooked and that child would have remained at risk.

In our line of work, those few seconds matter. That one tool made them count.

I’ve seen many tools promise results. But in real investigations, few can deliver them when and where they’re needed most. What worked here was the combination of speed, offline reliability and built-in intelligence. There was no upload, no external lookup, no chance of contaminating evidence or triggering flags.

It wasn’t just the tech — it was the design. S21 LASERi‑X is built for frontline use. It fits into real workflows, like this one: triaging ahead of a full import, looking for actionable clues without waiting days for completion.
