Introduction
A detective received a standard case: a possession offence. Devices seized, images discovered, enough illicit material to press charges. But something didn’t sit right. The content seemed too specific, too focused. Genital imagery with no faces, familiar-looking surroundings — and no external identifiers. Just a feeling that this might be more than simple possession.
When instincts raise the alarm, the tools need to back you up.
From Suspicion to Certainty
Using S21 LASERi-X, the detective categorised the known illicit material, while simultaneously digging deeper into image origins. That’s when the breakthrough came — she ran the tool’s first-generation detection and a separate set of images emerged: visuals likely created by the suspect.
Filtering those results revealed something chilling. The same device that took family holiday photos was used to create the abuse images. Same metadata. Same locations. Sometimes on the same day.
When confronted with the evidence, the suspect confessed. The victims were close — too close — and hadn’t come forward. But now, thanks to this work, they could be safeguarded, supported and protected from further harm.
